Favicon Generator makes square website icons in all common sizes, from 16 pixels to 512 pixels, from a single picture. Download them one by one or as a ZIP.
What is a favicon?
A favicon is the small icon that appears in a browser tab, in bookmarks, in search results on phones and when someone saves your website to their home screen. It is a tiny detail, but it makes your website look professional and helps visitors find your tab among many others. This tool creates favicon images in all the common sizes from a single picture.
Which sizes are included?
The tool generates square PNG icons in nine sizes: 16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 180, 192, 256 and 512 pixels. The small sizes (16, 32 and 48) are used in browser tabs and bookmarks. 180 pixels is the size used by Apple devices for the home screen. 192 and 512 pixels are the sizes recommended for Android devices and web app manifests. The other sizes cover high-density screens and various platforms.
What image should you start with?
- Use a square picture, or one with the important part in the middle. The tool crops the centre square automatically.
- Use at least 512 by 512 pixels so the large icons stay sharp.
- Choose a simple design. Icons are tiny, so detailed pictures and long text become unreadable.
- Strong shapes and two or three colours work best.
Transparent or white background?
A transparent background lets the icon blend with the tab colour, but some pictures look better on white. If your logo is dark and thin, a white background may be more readable in dark mode tabs. If your logo is light, avoid white backgrounds. You can test both options and pick the one you prefer.
How to add the favicon to WordPress
In your WordPress dashboard go to Appearance, then Customize, then Site Identity. Upload the 512 by 512 icon in the Site Icon field. WordPress creates the other versions it needs automatically. Save and publish. If you do not see the change, clear your browser cache, because browsers store favicons for a long time.
How it works
The tool crops the centre square of your picture, scales it down to each target size using high-quality smoothing and saves each as a PNG. The files can be downloaded individually or all together as a ZIP archive. Everything happens in your browser, so your logo is not uploaded anywhere.
Tips
- Check how the 16 pixel version looks. If it is unclear, simplify your design.
- Keep the icon consistent with your logo and brand colours.
- Use the same icon for all pages of your site.
- Test the favicon on a phone as well as on a computer.
Troubleshooting
My old icon still shows. Clear the browser cache or open the site in a private window.
The icon looks blurry. Use a larger or sharper original image.
The picture is cut off. Only the centre square is used. Place the main part of your design in the middle.
Free to use
Select your image, choose the background and download all favicon sizes at no cost.
A real-world example
Hamza launches a new blog and wants a recognisable icon in browser tabs. He has a 1000 by 1000 pixel logo with a simple letter on a coloured background. He uploads it here, chooses a transparent background and downloads the ZIP. He uploads the 512 pixel version as the Site Icon in WordPress, and the icon appears across devices within a few hours.
Checklist before you download
- The design is simple and works at 16 pixels.
- The most important part is in the centre of the picture.
- You chose a background that looks good in light and dark tabs.
- You will clear the browser cache to see the new icon.

More questions about this tool
Do I need an ICO file?
Modern browsers work well with PNG icons. If you need an ICO file for an old system, use the 32 or 48 pixel PNG in an ICO converter.
How long does it take for a new favicon to appear?
It can take from a few minutes to a few days, because browsers and search engines cache icons. Clearing the cache or using a private window shows the change sooner.
