Split PDF breaks one document into smaller files. You can save every page as its own PDF, or enter custom ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 7 to create exactly the parts you need. All processing is done on your device.
What does splitting a PDF mean?
Splitting a PDF means breaking one document into smaller documents. You might want every page as its own file, or you might want a long report divided into chapters. This tool lets you do both: save each page separately, or enter custom page ranges and get exactly the parts you need. It works in your browser, so your document is never uploaded.
Why people split PDF files
- Sharing only the relevant part. If you have a 60 page contract but a colleague needs only pages 12 to 18, sending a smaller file is faster and more professional.
- Email size limits. Many email services limit attachments to around 20 to 25 megabytes. Splitting a heavy document into two or three parts lets you send it without compression.
- Separating combined scans. A scanner may save a stack of different documents as one file. Splitting separates them again.
- Chapters and sections. Teachers, authors and trainers often divide a book or manual into lessons.
- Privacy. You may want to share one page of a document without revealing the rest.
The two split modes
Every page as a separate PDF. The tool creates one file for each page. A 10 page document becomes 10 files, named with the original file name and a part number.
Custom ranges. Type ranges separated by commas. For example, entering 1-3, 4-6, 7 creates three files: one with pages 1 to 3, one with pages 4 to 6 and one with page 7 only. You can also write open ranges, such as 5- to mean page 5 until the last page.
How to write page ranges correctly
Use numbers that match the page position in the document, starting from 1. Use a hyphen for a range and a comma to separate different ranges. Spaces are fine. Page numbers must exist in the document; if you type a number that is higher than the page count, the tool shows a message telling you the valid range. This small check saves you from accidentally producing an empty file.
How the tool works
The tool opens your PDF in memory, creates a new empty document for each part, copies the selected pages into it and saves the result. Pages are copied as they are, so text remains selectable and image quality does not change. When more than one file is created, you can download them one at a time or all together as a ZIP archive.
Privacy and safety
Because all work happens in your browser, your document stays on your device. This matters for tax papers, medical reports, legal documents and anything else you would not want on someone else’s server. Close the page and the data is gone from memory.
Tips
- Open the PDF first and note the page numbers you need. Printed page numbers sometimes differ from the actual position in the file, for example when a cover page is not numbered.
- If you want to remove a few pages rather than split the file, the Remove PDF Pages tool is quicker.
- If you want to reorder parts after splitting, use the Merge PDF tool to put them together in a new order.
- Give the downloaded files meaningful names right away so you do not confuse them later.
Frequently seen problems
I get an invalid range message. Check that you used only digits, commas and hyphens, and that no page number is larger than the document length.
The PDF is password protected. Remove the password in your PDF viewer first. Encrypted files cannot always be read by browser tools.
I need to download many files. Use the Download all (ZIP) button to get everything in one go.
A real-world example
Ahmed receives a 90 page scanned file that contains three separate contracts: pages 1 to 28, 29 to 60 and 61 to 90. His colleagues each need only one contract. He enters 1-28, 29-60, 61-90 as custom ranges and gets three files, each named with a part number. He sends the right file to the right person instead of forwarding a huge attachment.
Checklist before you download
- You know the exact page positions of every part.
- Ranges are separated by commas and do not exceed the page count.
- You choose a ZIP download when many files are created.
- You rename the files so each one describes its content.
